״אבן מגדלה" היא אחד מהממצאים הארכיאולוגים החשובים בארץ ישראל״ (רשות העתיקות) ולראשונה לאחר מציאתה לפני כעשור, חוזרת האבן לכור מחצבתה במרכז התיירות מגדלה על שפת הכנרת הקהל הרחב מוזמן לבקר במקום ולצפות באבן החל מה-26 ביוני.
אבן מגדלה, נחשבת לאחד הממצאים הארכיאולוגים החשובים בארץ ישראל. בשנת 2009, במהלך בנייתו של מרכז מגדלה, התגלו ממצאים ארכיאולוגיים מפתיעים.
כפר דייגים שלם נשמר כמעט בשלמותו ובו בית כנסת מהמאה הראשונה (תקופת הבית השני), העתיק והשמור ביותר בגליל ואחד מכעשרה בתי כנסת בני התקופה לצד שרידי העיר מגדלה המשוערת כעיר הולדתה של מריה מגדלנה, מרים המגדלית.
בחפירות רשות העתיקות, בהובלתה של דינה אבשלום-גורני, נחשפה במרכז בית הכנסת אבן ייחודית.
זוהי תיבה מלבנית מאבן גיר, שלה ארבע רגלים. היא מעוטרת בתבליטים סכמתיים המתארים את המקדש ולדעת החוקרים שימשה כרהיט הקשור בקריאה בתורה. בחזית מתוארת מנורה, והיא הקדומה ביותר שנמצאה בבית כנסת. יש הסבורים שהיא מייצגת את בית המקדש ואת הכלים ששימשו בפולחן, ונראה כי נעשתה בידי אומן שראה בחייו את בית המקדש. האבן מלמדת על הקשר העמוק בין יהודי הגליל למקדש בירושלים.
בעקבות הממצאים המרעישים שהתגלו בחפירה, שונו תכניות הבנייה של מרכז מגדלה, ותהליך הבנייה התעכב. עם התקדמות החפירות, אבן מגדלה הועברה למרכז רשות העתיקות להמשך מחקר ושימור. שוקה דורפמן ז״ל, מנכ״ל רשות העתיקות, התחייב שהאבן תוצג במקום, באופן זמני, כאשר בניית המרכז תושלם. מאז, האבן הוצגה ברחבי העולם בתערוכות מרכזיות ביניהן:
ב-2017 בתערוכה משותפת של המוזאון היהודי ברומה ומוזיאון הוותיקן בשם: ״מנורה: כת, היסטוריה ומיתוס״, כחלק מהתערוכה של המזרח התיכון במוזיאון המטרופוליטן לאומנות בניו יורק ב-2018 ובמסגרת תערוכת ״שביל הסנהדרין״ בבית יגאל אלון בגינוסר ב-2021.
החפירות החשובות במגדלה והממצאים שנמצאו במהלכן הפכו את האתר לנקודת ציון בינלאומית בישראל המהווה מוקד משיכה לאלפי מבקרים מדי שנה ומזוהה היום ״כצומת יהודית-נוצרית היסטורית״.
בשלהי 2019 הושלמה בנייתו של מלון מגדלה ולרגל פתיחתו, יצרה הנהלת המלון קשר עם רשות העתיקות בנוגע להבטחתה להחזרת האבן למקומה המקורי. אכן, ההבטחה מולאה ביום ראשון האחרון, עם הגעתה של האבן למגדלה.
הארכיאולוגית הראשית של המתחם, מרסלה זאפטה מאוניברסיטת אנהוק: ״העובדה שהאבן חוזרת למקומה המקורי היא בעלת חשיבות היסטורית ודתית. זהו ממצא ייחודי ואחד החשובים שנמצאו בארץ ישראל. כדי שמשמעות האבן תובן במלואה, יש חשיבות להציגה במקום המצאה. האבן, יחד עם ממצאים נוספים, מסייעים בהבנת הזהות היהודית של מגדלה כמו גם הדרך בה תושבי מגדלה שמרו על יהדותם והקשר שלהם לבית המקדש בירושלים. לאחר עשור בה האבן הופרדה ממקום הימצאה, לחזרתה יש השלכות משמעותיות על ההיסטוריה של האתר, על היהדות, ומחקר היסטורי של ארכיאולוגיה מתקופת התנ"ך.

The Magdala Stone, one of the most important archaeological finds in the Land of Israel, is returning to its original site at the Magdala Center on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The stone will be available to be viewed by the public starting June 26th.
In 2009 during the construction of the Magdala Center, archaeologists found a first century synagogue, the earliest dated synagogue in Galilee, one of ten in Israel from this period and the best preserved, as well as the remains of the ancient city of Magdala believed to be Mary Magdalene's hometown.
In the center of the synagogue, a uniquely decorated stone was identified with reliefs believed to be schematic representations of the Second Temple, according to scholars and archeologists. On the front of the stone, the earliest engraved depiction of a menorah found in a synagogue added significant archaeological and historical value to this find. The stone was used as a "bimah," a reading table from which the Torah was read. Its presence testifies to the strong connection between Magdala's inhabitants and the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
As excavations and site development continued, the Magdala stone was moved to the Israel Antiquity Authority (IAA) headquarters for further research and safekeeping. The late Shuka Dorfman, then General Director of the IAA, pledged that the stone would be returned to be displayed on site once the center's facilities were finalized. Since then, the stone has been touring internationally and within Israel, being shown in major exhibitions, including the 2017 co-exhibit between the Jewish Museum of Rome and the Vatican Museums, "Menorah: Cult, History, and Myth," as part of the Ancient Near Eastern Art Collection at the MET in New York in 2018, and in the "Sanhedrin Trail Exhibit" hosted in Nof Ginosar in 2021.
The development of the archaeological findings in Magdala and their importance has led the site to become an international landmark in Israel, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors and pilgrims yearly to visit the site, today recognized as a "crossroads of Jewish and Christian history."
In late 2019 the completion of construction and grand opening of the Magdala Guesthouse prompted property management to inquire regarding the IAA's promise on the stone. That promise is fulfilled this Sunday.
On the arrival of the stone to Magdala, on-site Chief Archaeologist Marcela Zapata, from Anahuac University stated,
"The fact that the stone returns to its original location and context is of significant historical and religious importance. It is a unique piece that is one of the most notable finds in the land of Israel. For the stone's meaning to be adequately understood, it must be displayed on site. The stone, along with the site's additional findings, helps to identify the Jewish identity of Magdala as well as the way the inhabitants of Magdala observed Judaism on-site and their connection to the Temple in Jerusalem. After ten years of being detached from its original context, its return has major implications to the site's history, Judaism, and historical research of biblical archaeology. "
Fr. Juan Maria Solana, LC, Director, and Founder of Magdala noted, "I remember when the late Shuka Dorfman visited Magdala for the first time and contemplated the synagogue and the stone remarking himself of the importance of maintaining the stone on site within its context otherwise 'the synagogue would seem to be a beheaded body.' The return of the Magdala stone to its home displays the great level of cooperation between Magdala and Israel's government agencies, including the Israel Antiquities Authority, municipal and regional authorities, as well as the Ministry of Tourism, in making Magdala an international tourist landmark in Israel."
The Magdala stone will be publicly unveiled in Magdala on June 26th. It will be displayed to visitors daily from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm with entry to the Magdala Archaeological Park.
